Reyjavík is believed to be the first landing point by a Norwegian Viking explorer in 9th century. It is now the capital city with a population of 120,000, making it the most populated city in Iceland. This young-at-heart-city offers something different from other European cities. Sight of Attractions in Reykjavik
Perlan or the Pearl is a unique piece of architecture that earned it the name of the most popular sight in Reykjavik. It is a dome made only from glass and steel standing on five hot water tanks. It’s function? A freely accessible platform allowing 360 degree of panoramic viewing of the city. Under the dome is a revolving restaurant that offers fine cuisine.
Hallgrimskirkja is a church located on a hill overlooking the city that can seat over 1000 people at once. The statue of Leif Ericsson standing in front of Hallgrimskirkja Reykjavik is a gift from United States in year 1930, honoring the 1,000 anniversary of Iceland Parliament. The statue is in memorable to a Viking explorer who sailed far to North American in 10th century.
Whale watching
Whale watching is one of the most favorable activities for vacation travelers to Iceland. Best season runs from late March to late October. In addition to various species of whales, dolphins and seals can be frequently spotted too.
Geothermal Pool – Blue Lagoon
One activity not to miss while spending vacations in Iceland is the world’s famous geothermal pool. The most popular geothermal pool is Blue Lagoon, 47km from Reykjavik city center, around 40 minutes by driving. The warm seawater is rich with minerals, such as sulphur that helps to improve skin conditions, and the heat helps in blood circulation, all in natural way. Alternatively, there are a few reputable thermal pools in the city of Reykjavik, serving as a great way to relax and unwind while mingling with the locals.
Open Air City Museum – Arbaejarsafn illustrates how the Icelander lived in the ancient time. Histories are illustrated by real actors in open air, addressing the development of the city since it was founded.
The breathtaking view of Mt. Esia, Reykjavik’s landmark mountain can be seen clearly at the city northern water front park. There is also a sculpture by the name Sun Voyager in the shape of a Viking ship standing in the park. This water front park is a popular destination for locals and tourists, for leisure activities such as cycling or strolling with their love ones.
