Golden Circle of Iceland

Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in Southern Iceland, starting from capital city Reykjavik towards central Iceland. Main attractions on the route include Pingvellir, Gullfoss, and the geothermal active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur, Kerid Crater, Skalholt church, Hverageroi greenhouse village and the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant.

iceland-travel-geyser-strokkurGullfoss, meaning golden falls, is a spectacular waterfall that is in the list of Iceland top travel destination. Two grand geysers, Strokkur and Geysir are both spectacular to watch. Strokkur geyser erupts frequently, at about 5 minutes interval at height up to 20 meters. Geysir which does not erupt frequently, is located just few meters away from Strokkur and is the oldest geyser known.

Pingvellir is a site with a combination of historical, cultural, and geological importance. In 930, one of the world’s first republican government was formed. The Parliament (Alpingi) was formed at Pingvellir and remained as central of administration until 1789. Pingvellir National Park was founded in 1930 to protect the remains of the parliament site.

iceland-travel-crater-keridKerid Crater is a result of a volcanic explosion in the Grimsnes region at 55m deep and encircling a small green lake. This 3000 year old Kerid Crater is now filled with water. The marvelous color displayed has made it a popular attraction to vacation travelers to Iceland. Kerid Crater is located nearby Skalholt.

Skalholt church. Skalholt is a historical site that can be traced back to 11th century, and was given the name ‘the largest town in Iceland’. The first bishopric was founded in Skalholt in 1056, and in 1954, archeologist found skeleton of Pall Jonsson, who was one of the most powerful bishop in Skalholt at the site of the cathedral. Today, his body is on display at a new cathedral church built in 1956.
