Introduction to Denmark

Denmark is a Scandinavian country in northern Europe which consists of a large peninsula, Jutland, two main islands, Zealand and Funen, and hundreds of other minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Zealand attracts the most tourists, in particular Copenhagen city where many great old palaces, museums and nightlife awaits. Denmark is the second-most visited tourist destination in Scandinavia, after Sweden.

Transportation in Denmark

Getting around in Denmark is very convenient with its highly developed and modern transportation system. The airports of Copenhagen and Billund offer various domestic and international routes, while ferries provide services to Sweden, Germany, Norway and the UK. The Danish islands can also be reached by ferries. The motorway and railway networks provide extensive coverage across the country as well as links to adjacent countries.

In the greater Copenhagen area, a traditional suburban train network called the S-train (S-tog in Danish) connects the city center with the suburbs of Copenhagen. Other than the electrically operated S-train, there is also Copenhagen Metro which is an automated driverless rail rapid transit system serving Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Bicycle lanes and tracks are common in Danish cities especially Copenhagen and Odense. About 20 percent of all trips in Copenhagen are by bicycle, and one-third of all trips to work are by bicycle. One of the best ways to experience vacations in Copenhagen is to tour around the city is by bicycle. The distances in the inner city are reasonable, there are no hills to contend with, and cycling through the traffic is safe and relaxing.

Best time to Travel to Denmark

The best time to visit Denmark is in the summer time around May to October, although it can be hotter than expected due to the long hours of sunshine and the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. The warming effect also makes the climate in Denmark milder for a Scandinavia country in winter times. The country’s geographical location in the northern hemisphere makes the days short in winter months, and some tourist attractions do not open. Scenic countryside view on the few hours of sunlight and some halfway decent skiing are available in non-peak season. Fantastic bargains are available on hotels and flights in winter months.
